TRADITIONAL EASTER EXPERIENCES
One of the highlights of the year in the Algarve is the Festa das Tochas Floridas - Flower Torches Festival at São Brás de Alportel. The Festival takes place on Easter Sunday and is a colourful spectacle. The streets of the town are carpeted with fresh flowers, and local residents decorate their balconies and windows with flowers too, to add to the show.
The Festival opens at 9.30am. You need to get there early to see the show of flowers along the streets. At 11am the Resurrection Procession begins - men carry beautifully crafted “torches” of flowers along a route that ends at the town's main church. A true Algarve Easter tradition.

Loulé’s Festival of the Sovereign Mother is another iconic event happening this Easter. Considered the largest religious event south of Fátima, it begins on Easter Sunday, 31st March , with a procession to carry the statue of the patron saint down from its sanctuary in the Church of Our Lady to the Church of São Francisco. The statue remains in the Church of São Francisco until the 'Big Feast' two weeks later on 14th April.
