Cabanas Beach
Swim or take a water taxi to Cabanas Island
Cabanas gets it’s name from the huts which were built somewhere in the 18th century by the tuna fishermen to store their fishing gear. Later they built themselves proper houses and so the fishing village of "Cabanas de Tavira" was born. Tuna fishing is still very important in the area.
Cabanas Island is 7km long 70m wide, you can swim across to it or use the "water taxis" the trip across takes only a few minutes and operates day & night, there is a charge of €1.50 each way for the trip. These water taxis not only go to the island beach they also go further along to Tavira, Tavira Island and to Santa Luzia.
The main road, Avenida de Ria Formosa runs the length of the waterfront and underwent a major facelift in 2010 and now there is a boardwalk running the length of the avenue with of course a huge selection of restaurants, cafes bars & shops.
The beach offers goods facilities too: life guard on duty during the bathing season, sun beds for rent, toilets, showers and restaurants.
It is also ideal for windsurfing & sailing.
