In October, on the west coast of the Algarve, the Sagres peninsula becomes the main crossing point in Portugal for many varieties of migratory birds, as they head towards the warmer climes of Africa.
The Sagres Birdwatching Festival is an annual event with some of the best opportunities in the world to observe migratory birds from both the land and the ocean.
The 2017 Festival starts on 4th October and runs for 5 days. This year's programme covers a wide variety of birdwatching and nature activities including bird ringing, boat trips, field trips, exhibitions, kids activities and diving and surfing lessons.
Some of the activities are free and some require prior registration.
