Lagos Bathing Festival

After two years of suspension, this year on 29th August Lagos is once again holding this Bathing Festival, one of the most beloved traditions of the municipality. Included in this great celebration there will be historical recreations, food and drink, parades in traditional bathing suit and lots of live music.

In Lagos (Cais da Solaria), there will be a concert by Toy, and in nearby Praia da Luz there will 3 stages with live bands and DJ's.

It is said that this bathing on August 29 scares away demons. Whether this comes from ancient times and is linked to end of summer rituals, or is of Arab heritage, the custom is maintained today along with the festivals involved in the tradition.

The festivities begin early in the morning with a historical procession along the Avenida dos Descobrimentos,reliving the times when the population travelled from the countryside to the sea for this traditional bathe,

From 7 pm onwards, a party takes place at Cais da Solaria, with Zumba, food, drink and entertainment. There will be prizes for the best old-fashioned bathing suits and  the highlight of the night will be the concert by Toy, a well-known Portuguese singer. See the programme below.

There will free transport available between Lagos and Praia da Luz.
