Vale do Lobo Art Sessions

A series of special art workshops hosted by Vale do Lobo and local artists. Includes Portuguese tile painting, ceramic making and jewellery workshop. At Vale Real - an open-air, connected to nature venue overlooking the lake.

The summer workshops continue in September -  you can join local artists at Vale Real and connect with your creative side in a series of hands-on workshops hosted by Vale do Lobo. The Art Sessions include workshops on Portuguese tile painting, on making ceramics, on copper jewellery work and weaving with palm. Boost your creativity by trying new activities and have memorable souvenirs to take home with you.

29th Sept. - Palm weaving workshop

Weaving Palm in the Algarve is an artisanal technique, made with local palm leaves. The palm leaves, before being used, must be harvested by hand, dried and separated according to their thickness. The best quality leaves are then subjected to a bath to lighten and, if necessary, dyed. Made mainly by women, the process is divided into several phases: initially, the palm leaves are braided; then, the tips generated in the previous process are cut; finally, the piece is sewn, using palm thread. 

In this workshop, you will meet a local artisan and designer, that will share with you all the secrets and techniques of this art and teach you all the process. She will show you how palm leaves are braided and teach you how to sew previously braided palm so that you can produce your own palm item (coasters, traditional trivet, small basket, other). No prior experience is required.
