Operation Green Mountain (Operação Montanha Verde) is back this year and aims to make the Algarve environmentally richer with 42,000 new trees to be planted across eight counties.
Days and Dynamics
This year the crop will be divided into days: it will be split between November 10th (Sunday, for families and other stakeholders) and November 11th (Monday, for school groups and other stakeholders). It will also be divided in terms of dynamics: planting of endemic trees and removal / control of alien / invasive species.
Zoomarine - “Together We Protect” initiative
As in previous years, Zoomarine's “Together We Protect” initiative will once again double its range. So, in 2019, in addition to the municipalities of Silves, Loulé, Portimão and Monchique, the volunteers will also help to plant in Lagoa, Olhão, Tavira and São Brás de Alportel.
If you are interested in volunteering to help plant the 42,000 trees, you can sign up via the website (required for insurance and operational logistics).
In 2018, the project attracted overr 1300 volunteers. This year, the aim is to sign up at least 2500 - be one of them!
'We remain aware that planting 42'000 more trees in 2019 does not change the world ... But it can be a big help to some parts of our Algarve. And sometimes just a tree is enough to help make a difference: for humans, for other species ... and for our collective consciousness.'
His Excellency, the President of the Republic has renewed his High Patronage of the project, and RTA - Algarve Tourism Region and ALGAR SA are continuing to sponsor the event. In addition, there are two new sponsors this year: Águas do Algarve SA and Vila Vita Parc Resort & Spa.
