One of the most popular beaches in the Algarve, Praia Grande is great for families, for relaxation and sunset scenes.

Praia Grande is a large beach with fine sands, located by Ferragudo and opposite Portimão and Praia da Rocha. Set by the River Arade estuary, and protected by a breakwater at the western end, the water here is usually calmer than more open beaches, making it ideal for families. In an area of smaller cove beaches, Praia Grande is one of the longest beaches in the Ferragudo - Carvoeiro area.

The Praia Grande Beach Services & Watersports area hires out shaded sun loungers for full and half days relaxation by the sea. There are paddle boats, with slides available too - the calm waters are perfect for family fun in the pedaloes. And there are kayaks for hire, the estuary waters making it easy to explore and get the best views of the coastline.

The floating waterpark , run by Navibordo, is exactly what it says on the tin. It's an array of slides, jumps, obstacles and more, floating in the water, a few metres from shore. Great fun, the slides are good for a range of ages, and it's right up there with the best fun you can have at the beach.

Especially worth seeing when you take the kayaks or pedaloes out is the Forte São João, which dates from the 15th century and was originally a lookout tower. The fort is just upriver from the main stretch of Praia Grande and makes for very scenic photos.

There is a good selection of beach restaurants on Praia Grande - either for a meal or just a chilled drink on a hot day. And there is even a children's playground to keep the little ones happy.
