The five courses at Vilamoura are world renowned for providing quality golf in environmentally friendly surroundings. Darren Clarke described the courses as ´ five jewels in the one crown.´ The courses have recently been acquired by Oceanico group and within the next year there are two more golf courses due to open, The Faldo Course and The O´Connor Course, which should firmly establish Vilamoura as Europe´s premier golfing destination.
The Laguna and The Millennium Course both share the same clubhouse and there are 2 chipping greens, 3 putting greens and a large driving range for a bit of pre-match practice.
The Laguna Course was designed by the American, Joseph Lee and encompasses different aspects of golf throughout the round. Many of the holes play in open terrain, which often attracts some strong winds liable to push your ball towards any of the 79 bunkers. However, due to the holes being open, there is room for error unlike 11 of the holes that are affected by the several lakes around the course.
In particular, the four holes starting from the 12th that play around the lakes and streams of the surrounding wetlands can turn a relatively inexpensive round into an expensive one through ball loss. The two most attractive holes on the course are holes 4 and 5, a short par 3 and a par 4.
Both of the courses offer the golfer a challenging fun round and in the future, once the thousands of trees that have been planted are fully grown and proper investments are made into course maintenance, both the Millenium and Laguna will equal the quality of The Old Course and Victoria. However, at the moment the quality is reflected in the price.
