Description

The Coast and Origins of São Miguel The tour kicks off at the Miradouro do Ilhéu de São Roque, where you can take in a sweeping view of the volcanic islet and the Ponta Delgada coastline. We'll then head to Praia das Milícias and the São Caetano Fort, a must-see to appreciate the consistency of the dark volcanic sand—one of the Azores' most distinctive features. The tour continues to the Lagoa Natural Pools, formed by ancient lava flows that created natural barriers against the ocean, showcasing the geological force that shaped São Miguel. Heading north, you'll reach the famous Santa Barbara Beach in Ribeira Grande, the island's main surf spot. Here you can explore the old Casa-Mata and feel the intense energy of the ocean. Before lunch, we'll take a break in the Historic Center of Ribeira Grande, where you'll have the chance to admire the baroque architecture, explore the traditional streets, and observe the daily life of the second largest city in the Azores. It starts with the ascent to the impressive Lagoa do Fogo, one of the most preserved and natural views of São Miguel. We'll stop at the most iconic viewpoints, such as Pico da Barrosa, to admire this impressive crater formed by past volcanic eruptions. The descent down the southern slope offers sweeping views where, on clear days, you can see both the north and south coasts of the island. The route takes us to the historic Cerâmica Vieira, the oldest factory on the island, where you can closely observe the traditional process of making handmade pieces. Then, we'll enjoy a traditional Azores lunch, perfect for recharging your batteries for an afternoon of exploration. We'll continue to the Pico do Carvão viewpoint and the old Sete Cidades Aqueduct, which once carried water to Ponta Delgada and symbolizes the entrance to the Sete Cidades region. Next, we'll head to Canário Lake, surrounded by lush vegetation and commonly called the entrance to the renowned Boca do Inferno viewpoint. We'll wrap up at the famous Vista do Rei viewpoint, known for offering the most famous view in Portugal: the perspective of the Green and Blue Lagoons, one of the highlights of any visit to the Azores. This tour combines history, culture, geology, and some of the most impressive views of the archipelago, offering a full and unforgettable day on São Miguel Island.
