Mediterranean Creative Seafood Cafe - Bistro Portuguese Tapas Food and Gourmet Maria do Mar, in Portimão, is a small restaurant and gourmet shop where you can sample the amazing flavours of a wide range of canned fish. An ode to tradition, seasoned with a modern touch, Maria do Mar is a fabulous experience of local flavours, and showcases some of the best local products.

In the past, Portimão was an important player in the fish canning industry, with local factories producing canned fish - sardines, mackerel, tuna - which was enjoyed around the world. Visit Portimão Museum for a fascinating insight into this industry and its role in the local community.

Maria do Mar is both shop and restaurant, with a fabulous range of artisanal, canned fish products, to buy and take away, or to enjoy as savoury meals right there. Spicy chilli sardines, tuna with aromatic herbs, mackerel fillets, baby sardines and Atlantic pomfret, are available, as well as Tuna Muxama - salted and dried tuna loin. Altogether there are over 300 varieties of fish available. The products at Maria do Mar are not mass-produced and are not available at regular supermarkets, so dining or shopping here gives you a real taste of local and traditional flavours.

The menu includes tasty tuna, mackerel and sardine burgers, bruschetta with a range of fish, spicy or not, patés, salads and even a tasting menu of various fish. Maria do Mar also has a nice wine list featuring local Algarve wines, that go beautifully with the dishes served.
