Xerém Restaurante

Xerém Restaurant offers a fusion of traditional and modern Portuguese cuisine, where fresh, local produce stars. Nestling in the gentle Algarve countryside, just a few miles from the ocean, at Xerém you can enjoy the best from both land and sea. The varied menu, and excellent wine list (plus great live music and fado) are as good a reason as any to wander inland and discover countryside fine dining, where you can sample Cataplanas, seafood, tender steaks as well as vegetarian options.

Housed in a traditional Algarvian farmhouse just north of Albufeira, the restaurant has a cosy, rustic, indoor dining room, and a pretty summer terrace for relaxed outside dining. Friendly and welcoming, it’s a great spot for tranquil meals for two, for family gatherings and with groups of friends.

The restaurant is named after a very traditional Algarvian dish. Xerém is a corn porridge, similar to polenta but with a finer grain, and is used in combination with many different ingredients – clams, shrimp, meat, vegetables and plenty of herbs, Xerém is versatile and healthy, and a much-loved local dish. At Xerém Restaurante you can sample various versions – with squid, with lobster, carabineros, mussels and prawns, with black pork tenderloins, or with a medley of vegetables.

Serving much more than just xerém, the inclusion of this traditional dish is an indicator that at Xerém Restaurante, the traditional is valued, and given a new lease of life with some creative touches and extra flavour. Another very Portuguese dish is also on the menu – Cataplana. You can enjoy different types of Cataplana here – with seafood, with chicken, or the traditional pork and clams combination.

Other dishes on the menu include delicious steaks and fresh seafood, where the quality of the produce shines through, and there is even a special family menu composed of hearty dishes such as Bacalhau a Brás (shredded cod with eggs and fine-cut chips).
