Forte e Feio
Portimão was in times past a very important fishing town, particularly famous for the quality of the sardines. During the summer months, when the sardines are fat and delicious, Portimão is the venue of choice to tuck into generous platters of grilled sardines, served with salad and washed down with local wine.
Forte e Feio Restaurant is located at what was once a dockland warehouse, next to the famous 'old bridge' in Portimão. This is where shiploads of fresh sardines were unloaded every day, before heading to local markets. The restaurant has retained much of the original structure, the stone walls and wooden beams adding to the atmosphere.
At Forte e Feio seafood rules the menu. There is a huge variety of fish available all year round, much of it perfect for grilling over charcoal on the streetside grills. Served with salad and your drink of choice, this is a simple yet healthy and very delicious meal.
You can also enjoy traditional Cataplanas - tasty seafood stews, served in a special clam-shaped pot, as well as a selection of meat dishes.
The riverside area of Portimão, and specifcally where Forte e Feio is located is very popular with locals and visitors, looking to enjoy traditional flavours in an intrinsically Algarvian setting.
