Daytime views across the Ria Alvor from Ababuja are spectacular, especially in the Spring. And while it's all about sea fresh fish at Ababuja (no farmed fish here) be sure to leave room for a slice of some amazing chocolate cake.
Those that appreciate good seafood love the Algarve and they adore Àbabuja Restaurant in Alvor. Located just metres from the seafront you can enjoy some delicious traditional Algarve cuisine, a wonderful ambience and spectacular views.
Ababuja Restaurant is just one of eight restaurants in the Algarve to recevive the Quality Seal from the Algrave Hoteliers Association in 2015 and it is consistently considered one of the best portuguese restaurants in the region.
'Babuja' is what the locals call the foam on breaking waves and in the not too distant past it was not unusual to have high tide waves breaking almost at the door of the restaurant. These days the risk of getting your toes wet is much less likely, but you can still enjoy the closeness to the seafront, the views of the small marina offering boat trips along the coast, and the tranquil beauty of the Ria Alvor.
The restaurant consists of a spacious indoor dining room, with brick walls, stone arches and artful lighting. This room is ideal for cosy winter evenings as well as groups and family gatherings. The large terrace is the perfect place, in summer or winter, to enjoy a relaxing meal and watch the flow of people strolling along the waterfront. In the winter the terrace is cosily heated and in the summer its glass front opens, and even the roof panels are lifted, allowing you to enjoy the mellow Algarve evenings by the river.
Fish and seafood dominate the menu at Àbabuja. Starters include clams, mussels, prawns, cockles and an excellent fish soup. The fish of the day is grilled over charcoal and served with a fresh salad and potatoes. Simple, very Algarve and totally delicious. Àbabuja specials include Monk fish rice, Caldeirada (a mixed fish stew) and Massada de Peixe - a medley of fish cooked with pasta and perfumed with fresh coriander. If you can't do without meat, the menu also features a good choice of steak and meat dishes as well as vegetarian options.
Those with a sweet tooth are not forgotten as Àbabuja has a good selection of desserts and home-made cakes. There is chocolate cake, carob tart and fig tart, flambéed figs, various crepes and mango mousse.
Àbabuja is one of Alvor's best known restaurants and is very popular with visitors of all nationalities. We strongly recommend you visit during your stay in the Algarve and if possible make a reservation, particularly during high season as it can get very busy.
