Those that appreciate good seafood love the Algarve and they adore Àbabuja Restaurant in Alvor. The freshest fish and seafood, traditional Portuguese flavours, and amazing views of the Ria de Alvor. Perfect sunset views to match the welcoming hospitality. Open for lunch and dinner.
'Babuja' is what the locals call the foam on breaking waves and in the not too distant past it was not unusual to have high tide waves breaking almost at the door of the restaurant. These days the risk of getting your toes wet is low, but you can still enjoy the closeness to the waterfront, the views of the small marina offering boat trips along the coast, and the tranquil beauty of the Ria de Alvor.
Àbabuja highlights
Recently renovated, Àbabuja is looking better than ever - stylishly contemporary without losing any of its traditional soul. The cosy inner dining room with its brick walls and recessed windows is evocative of a fisherman's cottage from times past. The main dining room is spacious and filled with lovely Algarve light, the hues changing as sunny daylight changes to the magic of dusky evenings.
Overlooking the Ria de Alvor, the views from Àbabuja at any time of the day are spectacular, changing with the ebb and flow of the tides. Sunset is special here, as the sun slips behind the hills across the estuary, with each table at Àbabuja providing the perfect viewing spot.
Given its location and history, it is no surprise that fresh fish and seafood feature strongly on the menu. As you enter the restaurant there is a display with the fish of the day - a veritable ode to the ocean on a platter. The fish is grilled to order in the traditional way - prepped and onto the open-air charcoal grill, then straight to your plate.
There are clams, oysters, mussels, cockles and prawns to enjoy, fried squid, razor clams with rice, fresh tuna steaks, and of course, traditional cataplanas and fish and rice stews.
There is a good selection of quality meat too, including pork fillet, t-bone and fillet steaks, as well as vegetarian and vegan options.
Àbabuja is one of Alvor's best-known restaurants and is very popular with Portuguese and international diners. The welcoming atmosphere and excellent food, not to mention the views, make for a winning combination.
