Description
Begin your journey in Nazaré, famous for its giant waves at Praia do Norte. Visit the iconic Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo, the clifftop fort overlooking Praia do Norte, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Atlantic and learn how the underwater Nazaré Canyon creates these massive swells. In the old town, stroll through narrow streets, see traditional seven-skirted local dress, and taste regional sweets like “Toucinho do Céu.”
Next, head to Praia do Baleal, near Peniche, one of Portugal’s most beloved surf beaches. Known for consistent waves and golden sands, Baleal offers a laid-back vibe and stunning coastal scenery. Enjoy free time to walk along the scenic cliffs, relax on the beach, enjoy lunch at a seaside restaurant (not included), or take photos of Baleal’s unique peninsula formation.
The highlight of the day is a boat trip to Berlengas Island, part of the protected Reserva Natural das Berlengas, classified as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2011. Cruise through sea caves and grottoes, see the 17th-century Forte de São João Baptista, built in 1651 to defend Portugal from pirate attacks, and spot native seabirds such as Cory’s shearwaters. You’ll also have free time to swim (weather permitting), snorkel, or explore scenic walking trails.
