Description
Explore Alfama, one of Lisbon’s oldest and most historic neighborhoods. Located between Lisbon Cathedral and São Jorge Castle, Alfama is famous for its narrow streets, colorful houses, old stone buildings, traditional atmosphere, and beautiful viewpoints over the Tagus River.
Learn about the history of Alfama, which goes back many centuries. The neighborhood developed strongly during the period of Muslim rule in the Iberian Peninsula. The name “Alfama” is generally associated with an Arabic origin, often connected with the idea of a place related to warm springs or baths. During the Muslim period, the area was developed with narrow streets and small houses built closely together.
In 1147, Lisbon was conquered by the first king of Portugal, Afonso I, with the support of Christian forces. After the Christian conquest, Alfama continued to grow as an important residential area. Its location close to the castle and the river made it particularly significant.
One interesting fact about Alfama is that it survived the devastating 1755 Lisbon earthquake better than many other parts of central Lisbon. The neighborhood's location on relatively solid ground and its traditional construction helped many buildings remain standing. While much of downtown Lisbon was destroyed, Alfama retained many of its historic streets and buildings.
Today, this historical character is one of Alfama's greatest attractions. Visit São Jorge Castle, one of the most important landmarks overlooking Alfama. The castle stands on one of Lisbon's highest hills and has played an important role in the city's military and political history.
From the castle area, see the rooftops of Alfama stretching toward the Tagus River. The combination of historic architecture, red rooftops, and the blue river creates one of Lisbon's most memorable views.
Alfama is especially famous for its miradouros, or viewpoints. These viewpoints provide excellent panoramic views of Lisbon and the Tagus River.
Miradouro de Santa Luzia is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Alfama. It is known for its decorative Portuguese tiles, known as azulejos, and its small garden. From here, look across the historic rooftops toward the Tagus River. The viewpoint is particularly attractive in the morning and around sunset.
Just a short tuk tuk guide best option from Santa Luzia is Miradouro das Portas do Sol. The name means “Viewpoint of the Gates of the Sun.” It offers one of the classic postcard views of Alfama. From this location, see the Tagus River, church towers, old houses, and the surrounding hills. It is also a popular place for photographs and enjoying a coffee while watching Lisbon's daily life.
Although technically outside Alfama, Miradouro da Graça is very close and offers another spectacular perspective of Lisbon. From the viewpoint, see São Jorge Castle, central Lisbon, and the Tagus River.
