Description
Begin near the tunnel leading to the beach and imagine the former fishing settlement before the arrival of modern tourism. Learn how generations of local families depended on the sea—and why the same ocean that sustained the town could also destroy it.
Return to the morning of November 1, 1755, when one of Europe’s most powerful recorded earthquakes struck Portugal. Hear how the ground shook, buildings collapsed, and enormous waves reached the Algarve coast. The disaster destroyed much of Albufeira, damaged its medieval defenses, and changed the town forever.
Walk through streets that preserve traces of the former fortified settlement. Discover where the castle gates and defensive towers once stood, see one of the few buildings believed to have survived the earthquake, and learn what happened to the old parish church.
Continue towards the Clock Tower, Praça da República, the Church of Sant’Ana, and the remains of Albufeira’s coastal defenses. Your guide will explain how the town rebuilt itself and later survived war, economic decline, and the disappearance of its traditional fishing industry.
Along the route, hear stories connected with fishermen lost at sea, hidden coastal passages, contraband, and local legends passed down through generations. Historical facts will be clearly distinguished from folklore and popular tradition.
Finish overlooking the Atlantic as daylight fades over the coast. By the end of the experience, you will see Albufeira not simply as a beach resort, but as a resilient town carrying the memory of the sea within its streets.
