The Algarve Smooth Jazz Festival 2017, at VILA VITA Parc kicked off last night with a high energy All Stars Jam Session. Intimate and fun, the audience and the musicians loved every minute of it.

This second edition of the Algarve Smooth Jazz Festival brings some huge names in contemporary jazz to Portugal. Artists such as Kirk Whalum, Larry Braggs, Jackiem Joyner, Keiko Matsui, Paul Brown, Tom Baxton and Brian Culbertson will grace the stage at the VILA VITA Parc pavillion from 27th September to 1st October 2017.

The opening night Jam Session set the tone for the coming days. High octane music, lots of fun and great complicity on stage between the performers and with the audience. With a capacity for approximately 400 people, the pavillion is perfect for more intimate concerts, which the musicians really enjoy. Kirk Whalum (Grammy winner, multiple Top 10 albums on the Billboard jazz charts) explained that at the Algarve Smooth Jazz Festival it's all about the music, contrary to other larger festivals where the focus is more commercial. With the spotlight on the music, the performers relax and do what they do best - create great sounds. The All Stars Jam Session was a celebration of just that, with the musicians and audience clearly having a blast.
 

Organized by Smooth Travel, the Algarve Smooth Jazz Festival differs from the American prototype jazz festival where the venues are large. The aim is to stay relatively small, so that that connection between musician and audience is mantained; to keep things simple, so that the music is the focus; and to keeps things relaxed so that musicians and those attending the Festival can mingle and enjoy the experience together. Christian Bossner, founder of Smooth Travel, says that the European fan base is very loyal, following the Smooth Jazz events in Europe, and that the musicians enjoy the more relaxed atmosphere and the chance to experience some of the delights of the Algarve.

Hosted by VILA VITA Parc, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, it is hard to imagine a better scenario for the festival. The resort is 54 acres of beautiful gardens, lush vegetation, inviting pools, an array of bars and restaurants - including the 2 Michelin Star Ocean Restaurant - all overlooking the Atlantic and perched above a picturesque cove beach. Festival attendees can opt for packages of differing duration which include accommodation, concerts and experiences such as wine tasting at VILA VITA Parc's country estate, Herdade do Grous or taking a boat trip to look for dolphins in the wild.
