A local’s shopping tip

If you’re in Faro, head down to the Mercado Municipal near the river in the cooler months. It’s not just for fresh food, but also for artisans who bring in local pottery and textiles. You’ll find shop owners who’ve been in the trade for decades and are happy to share stories about their craft. Plus, visiting on a weekday avoids crowds and gives you time to chat and discover the best buys suited to your style.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some common questions about how our local picks work and what to expect.

Our Local Picks are chosen by a dedicated editorial team living in the Algarve. They rely on first-hand knowledge, personal visits, and feedback from the community to hand-select every recommendation.

The list is reviewed and updated regularly to reflect new openings, closures, and changes in quality so the picks stay relevant and helpful.

Yes, every pick focuses on genuine local products, like ceramics, cork items, or handmade crafts, rather than mass-produced souvenirs.

You’ll find a mix of markets and independent shops. Both are included because locals often shop at markets for fresh and unique items, especially in certain seasons.

That depends on what you’re after. Faro and Lagos offer convenience and a wider variety, but smaller villages like Tavira or Monchique often have more authentic, traditional options.

Absolutely. Some markets and vendors only operate during certain seasons or weekends, so checking opening days ahead can really improve your experience.
