Fancy hoping over the border to Spain for a fabulous six day music festival, then take a look at the Isla Cristina Festival!
The beautiful area of Isla Cristina is a mere 25km hop from the Portuguese border and this festival promises to be worth the trip. In its 3rd year, the Isla Cristina Festival aims to bridge the Middle Ages and the Vanguard, with a diverse programme of music performed by many well know musicians. In addition, there will be a series of interesting, educational talks by specialists in the arts, music and history, who will set the scene before each concert.
The FIMIC will present the Isla Cristina Festival Awards, which will be awarded to entities or personalities linked to the world of music and classical arts. The awards will be handed out at the end of the final concert of the III FIMIC, on the night of August 10th. The award is the work of the sculptor Pepe Gámez.
In the hall of the Horacio Noguera theatre, during the opening concert, there will be a Medieval Instruments exhibition, organised by XXVI Muestra de Música Antigua de Aracena and its Artistic director José Luis Pastor.
Under the direction of the great violinist Suyeon Kang, the Baroque Orchestra of Seville will present a programme at the inaugural concert, which includes some of the most emblematic concerts for violin from Italian Baroque, including works by Albinoni and Vivaldi. The FIMIC continues with its commitment to the culture of Andalucia, its artists and local associations, with a magnificent concert in collaboration with the Conservatorio Profesional de Música ‘Javier Perianes’ of Huelva. The first part of the concert will feature the most talented students from the Conservatory playing several pieces of chamber music. In the second part the extraordinary pianist from Cadiz, Carla Román, one of the most important young spanish talents in recent years, at 10 years of age will give a recital.
The proceeds of the concert will go to AIDOCMA (Asociación Isleña Dona Médula y Cáncer de Mama)
The 8th and the 10th of August will feature the Ensemble Ínsula of Isla Cristina Festival, named after its place of birth, with international soloists such as Suyeon Kang, Per Rundberg, Paolo Bonomini and Danka Nikolic. In these concerts we will be able to enjoy the famous Schubert quartet (The Death and the Maiden) and the Quintet for Piano op.81 by A. Dvorak, as well as other important works from their international repertoire, such as the Adagio by Samuel Barber or the Andante Festivo by Sibelius.
The final concert on the 10th August, offers the world premiere of a work by the renowned local composer María José Arenas: Los Colores Primarios. An extraordinary assignment from the Festival Internacional de Música de Isla Cristina, María José Arenas will play one of her compositions for the first time in her home town.
