Festa da Espiga is an annual traditional festival held in Salir, Loule, on the Feast of Ascension - 40 days after Easter. It's a lively three day event with music, dancing, food and drink.
An 'Espiga' is an arrangement of ears of wheat, mixed with poppies, roses, daisies and marigolds, bound together with an olive branch, collected on the morning of the Feast of Ascension. The Espiga is a symbol of abundance and peace and it's customary for villagers to hang an Espiga in their homes until the following year, then replace it with a new Espiga.
This year Salir is holding their annual Festa Da Espiga from 10th to 12th May, starting at 9am. The festival is divided into three events: Espiga Night, Popular Night and Youth Night, when the party continues into the small hours!
