Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, is the most popular of all the festivals from South Asia. Diwali takes place on 19th October this year and Masala Mantra will be celebrating throughout the weekend with a delicious, authentic Indian menu, as much house wine as you can drink AND a glass of sparkling wine.

Hindus celebrate the return of deities Rama and Sita to Ayodhya after their 14-year exile. They also celebrate the day Mother Goddess Durga destroyed a demon called Mahisha. But it's not just Hindus who celebrate Diwali - it's a great time of celebration for Jains and Sikhs too and, Diwali is celebrated across the world, in cities and towns where there are large Aisan communities.
The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word deepavali, meaning 'rows of lighted lamps'. Houses, shops and public places are decorated with small oil lamps called diyas.
