International Festival of Chamber Music in Algarve - FIMCA 2017

The second edition of the International Festival of Chamber Music in Algarve (FIMCA) takes place this October.

The festival brings musicians from internationally acclaimed ensembles to perform well known and lesser known masterpieces by Rachmaninov, Schostakovich, Vivaldi among others.

The concerts take place at the Teatro das Figuras in Faro on the 12th and 15th and Igreja do Carmo (Carmo Church) on the 14th.

PROGRAMME
12th October - White and Red - Opening Concert
Small Auditorium - Teatro das Figuras -  9.30pm
This concert presents works of great Russian composers, separated by a Revolution. Rachmaninoff, composing in a style of supreme individual and romantic expression, takes us in a flight of beautiful melodies through the dark depths of his imagination and the collective Slavic soul. In contrast, one never fully knows if Shostakovich is being ironic, sarcastic, innocent or denouncing. What pervades is a wise sadness of a man that felt the destiny of his people, as his own.

14th October - In Memoriam
Carmo Church - 9.30 pm
Arensky was deeply touched by the death of his mentor Tchaikovsky. In his quartet, he replaces one violin for a cello thus lending a darker sonority to the whole piece, which also offers happy memories and virtuosity. We join with the gifted students of the SuonArt from Braga to form a chamber orchestra, enjoying the rich harmonies of Vivaldi, the mourning meditation of Hindemith and the inventive joyfulness of Britten.

15th October -  À Grande e a Francesa
Teatro das Figuras - 12.00pm
The first half of the concert presents the first and last of the great French school of violin playing, Leclair in the 18th century and Ysaye in the 20th. The seldom played but original Concerto of Chausson conjures magical harmonic landscapes, melodies that give the feeling of flying and demand the joint virtuosity from pianist and string ensemble.
